The Man, The Sacrifice, The Battle… and the Thirst

Who is Hussain?

Hussain (a.s) was born in 626 CE in the holy city of Medina.
He was the son of Imam Ali (a.s) and Lady Fatima (s.a), the daughter of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. He grew up under the direct care of the Prophet himself, who loved him dearly and would often say: “Hussain is from me, and I am from Hussain.” He inherited not just the blood of the Prophet, but also his morals, his courage, and his deep sense of justice.

Why did Hussain rise?

In 680 CE, the leadership of the Muslim world was seized by Yazid — a ruler known for corruption, injustice, and moral collapse. Yazid demanded allegiance from Imam Hussain, but Hussain refused.
He knew that giving allegiance would be accepting tyranny as Islam — something he could never allow.
And so, he left Medina with his family and a few supporters, not to seek war, but to avoid bloodshed and preserve the true spirit of Islam.

On the 10th of Muharram, 61 AH (October 680 CE), in the burning land of Karbala (present-day Iraq), Hussain and his small group just 72 companions including women and children were surrounded by an army of over 30,000. They were cut off from water for three days under the blazing sun. Even the babies were crying from thirst. Still, Hussain did not surrender. He gave chance after chance for peace, offered dialogue, and reminded the enemy of Allah and justice. But his calls fell on deaf ears. One by one, his brave companions, his sons, brothers, nephews, and friends were killed in battle. Finally, Hussain himself stood alone. He fought with unmatched courage until he was surrounded, struck from all sides, and finally martyred.

The Thirst of Karbala

Perhaps the most heartbreaking part of Karbala was not just the bloodshed, but the denial of water. From the 7th to the 10th of Muharram, Imam Hussain, his family, and even his infant son Ali Asghar were denied a single drop of water by Yazid’s army.
The cries of “Al-atash! Al-atash!” (We are thirsty!) still echo in the hearts of every believer.
Even today, water is distributed freely (Sabeel) during Muharram in remembrance of that thirst. Because water was the weapon used against Hussain and he still responded with dignity, mercy, and patience.
